It is not uncommon that we encounter questions about the availability and feasibility of hiring armed guards for domestic operations. It is essential for both American and international clients to understand that the process of securing armed protection in Canada is complex and demanding. This blog aims to clarify the realities and dispel some common misconceptions about armed guard services.

Firstly, obtaining armed security is not a straightforward process. It requires extensive vetting, background checks, and compliance with stringent regulations. Unlike the portrayal in movies, most security operations involve a single agent working closely with the client. This arrangement is not only due to financial constraints -many individuals simply cannot afford the high cost of a full security team- but also practical considerations. For instance, carrying large sums of money, such as $70,000 in cash to go buy a car, necessitates high-level security, but generally not an armed guard- however all the details are developed via a Primary Assessment.

Specifically, armed protection typically requires specialized training, permits and approval of a Chief Firearm Officer. The prospect of armed guards for individuals is different than for assets.

Moreover, a significant challenge we face is the timing of client requests. Often, clients reach out to us at the last minute, leaving little room for thorough planning and preparation. While we strive to accommodate urgent needs, the reality is that effective security planning requires time and resources. High-value clients who can afford to invest in detailed security plans are the exception. For the majority, planning security on short notice can compromise the effectiveness of the operation.

Additionally, it is crucial to address the reactive nature of many security requests, particularly regarding the need for armed guards. People often seek armed protection impulsively, driven by fear and emotion, without fully understanding their actual risk level. This misconception is partly fueled by Hollywood's dramatized portrayal of security scenarios. In reality, armed guards are not always necessary and can sometimes escalate situations rather than mitigate them.

At JTFSecurity, we assess each client's unique circumstances and provide tailored security solutions. Often, less dramatic measures such as close protection and strategic planning are more appropriate and effective. Unfortunately, we have to frequently turn down contracts that are based solely on emotional reactions, as they do not align with our commitment to providing reliable and effective security solutions as the client’s expectations might be biased.

While armed guards play a vital role in ensuring safety, it is important for clients to approach their security needs with realistic expectations and adequate preparation. By understanding the complexities involved, clients can make informed decisions that enhance their safety and security effectively while obeying Canadian laws.
